Mini Box Project

It’s been a looong time since I’ve posted a blog, been soo busy this semester, but the projects have been really good so far – shall have my finals up of them closer to the end of semester with some snapshots of the development process as well! 🙂

So this was a project assigned to all of Communication Design – we each had to decorate a cardboard box with whatever we wanted. These are going to be used to decorate/ cover up the windows of a new Grays School of Art pop up shop – “Offset 57” – at The Academy Centre on Belmont Street – whilst it’s getting glammed up and ready for it’s open night!

I decided to have a bit of fun with this project, and one of the ideas that popped into my head for this was Schrödinger’s cat.

Here’s a link if you cant to know who the hell that cat is…

… and yes I’d heard about this cat before TBBT! 😛 Oh, and I should probably add the experiment was theoretical – they never actually put a cat in a box.

So this is basically Schrö’s Cat bursting from the box, a tad manic, and a tad pissed off at his owner – fair nuff I think! The original illustration was kind of loosely based on Tom from Tom and Jerry, but as he got applied to the box, he became a little bit more “Crazy Alleyway Cat” – which I think is more fitting to the situation anyways…

We were given restrictions on the colour scheme, to create some form of unity a midst the different box designs – we were allowed to use Black, White, Grey & Silver – either all of them of just some of them. So I decided to paint the box a base black colour and then illustrate my cat in white with grey highlights using paint markers.

So here’s the process…

                                   Applying the base coat.

Sketching out the illustrations…

… and creating their placement on the box.

Applying the white line…

… and adding the highlights in grey.

So that’s it, all I need to do is apply some tape to the inside of the box to strengthen it and then cover any bits of card still showing through! Shall post near Crimbo!

It’s been too long! And now for some zombies…

Back in the blogging world again… seems so long since I had time to type out a wee blog for ya’ll!

There’ll be 3 posts in short succession to catch you all up on my goings on the past few months (Unless you already know cause of Twitter that is – which btw is @graphicdesignks), this one is about a large project I did over late May/ and June. The next two will be about my summer uni project and other bits and bobs I’ve doing – ooh, exciting, haha! 😛

So among the flat searching, working, living out a suitcase, then back to the old hometown of my past days, I ended up being part of this brilliant, huge project in Renfrewshire! No rest for the wicked, I suppose!

It involved school children from Ferguslie, working together on a movie with a budget of ÂŁ20,000 raised by CashBack and Renfrewshire Youth Council. Other groups involved where Renfrewshire Council, Renfrewshire Arts & Museums, Creative Scotland and Renfrewshire Libraries.

Actor Kate Dickie (from Rab C Nesbit, Chewing the Fat and a lil’ film called Prometheus) and Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs – Fiona Hyslop were involved too!

Ferguslie’s has had some bad media in the past, and this was to show that the community is strong and there is a large amount of fantastic young talent there – actors, artists, dancers, script writers and designers!
So, to go along with the movie, they wanted a sorta spin-off graphic novel, all the artwork was created by the school children at graphic novel workshops over a period of sixteen weeks, and then I was brought in to design the layout of the mag – and fill out the dialogue – excuse my bad jokes in the novel! – to make it look like a comic. I was thinking along the lines of the style found in Beano and Dandy mags in the nineties (religiously bought by moi every Thursday for 20p for most of my childhood!) to match the humour of the movie/novel.

Oh, did I fail to mention the movie and book are about ZOMBIES TAKING OVER FERGUSLIE!!!

Well now you know. It’s called “Dawn of the Fegs” (Feg (Feh – egg) proper noun for someone who inhabits the area known as Ferguslie) and is a cross between Still Game, The Demon Headmaster, and Shaun of the Dead – wonderful! The spin-off comic is called “Terror at the Tanny” – The Tanny being the Tannahill Centre, the main hub of the community.

And it wasn’t just kids that took part in the movie! What about the bingo hall inhabiting zombie grannies, the slightly undead parents and the community hall’s Kung Fu fighting Janitor!!!

The movie was hilarious and fantastic – they’re hoping to enter into the Young Film competition for next years Edinburgh Film Festival, with the Graphic Novel in tow – used as the movie program. As well as this, they want to get it certified and shown at cinemas around Scotland as a short before the main movie! Good luck to them – I hope it goes well, they bloody deserve it!

The premiere was fab and it was great seeing everyone with a copy of the novel and having a good chuckle!

It was great to be part of and I’m pleased to say I’m now on Renfrewshire’s Freelance Designer database – well chuffed! 😀 Also, the comic has an ISBN, which means you can borrow it from any Renfrewshire library!

So here’s some images of the book as well as a list of links from the media coverage of the book and movie!

And here’s the media links if you fancy a look at them too! 🙂

Hangovers and Graphic Design

As you can probably guess from the title, I am rather hungover.
Self-inflicted pain that can only be cured by Super Noodles & Come Dine With Me combo.

Unfortunately neither of those are available to me right now – but onwards with the coursework!

So before all the birthday bash merriment last night there was of course Uni to attend. We had to create a design based on our matriculation number, and these would be displayed in the halls for the Open Day that took place today. They wanted us to voice our thoughts about these numbers through the image, for example “I’m not a number, I’m an individual … aaaarrrgghhhh!”

But I wasn’t in a raging rebellious mood, so I decided to doodle what the I would look like if I was that number…

…TADA!!!

So that took up a wee bit of studio time!

Still working on the massive bulk of research for this first project. When I start getting some ideas together tomorrow, I shall do a lil’ post then.

But for now I’m nursing this sore head with a cuppa!

BAZINGA! It’s the Chatterboxes and Shooting Stars!

Seems like forever since the my last post!

Since I last blogged my internet’s been acting up again – hello pre-2000! …

Anyways – it has returned after turning the router off and on several times over the duration of a fortnight! Also started the move up to my new flat (YayYayYay! :D) and been job searching (*I need a dollar dollar*).

Also been working on some doodles, and other ideas ‘n such – thought I might post a wee bit about them up here 🙂

So these are the “Chatterboxes” … they stem from little drawings I was doing of inanimate objects – twas giving them personalities. In this case, the larger speakers in my living room are two veeerrry gossipy women, with yappy little iPods…

This is an idea I’m still working on; a collection of postcards – pref’ large, kick ass A5 postcards – based on TV programs I’m into. The finals would be printed onto thick (pref 280 grams), matt card – although my first lil’ mock ups were made on glossy (only paper to hand at that point) and the colour looked soo vibrant on them, so might make it one side glossy – for the image – and the other matt, for the type.

These are the two that I’ve finished so far. The first one here is based on the show “Shooting Stars” – the design a simplified version of their target logo – and the bright colours representing the upbeat, comedy theme that the show has. The type on the back is one of the lines used, on a regular basis, on the show. Oh, and the font is Hattenschweiller (I think that’s the right spelling!). It gives it a nineties look – even though the program is still running, I feel it was at its height back then.

The second is based on the show “The Big Bang Theory”. The colours are based on the kind of t-shirts Sheldon wears, which ties in nicely with the type that I’ve chosen – “Bazinga!” – his choice of word for when he tries to play a joke on the others. The font is Arial – just to give Helvetica a holiday =P – I felt this just suited the theme, and the flatness, of the imagery. The lines and circles are to hint at neutrons, electrons ‘n such – since the the main characters are professors of Physics.

I think what I aiming for, to link them altogether, is flat, bright, simple shapes, with simple fonts. Hopefully I’ll have them finished soon so I can post up the final cards.

Also still finishing off my other sketches from the previous theme, so might post them up too. Anyways, back to the job search now – this student needs monies!

Raincoats, Puddles and Stars.

All this monsoon like weather has resulted in lots of free doodle time!

However, rather than help me out, the Little Devils decided to venture out into the weather in their cute little raincoats!

Also, here’s a sneak peak of what they’ve been up to on their own little page – remember to check it out from time to time to see what they’re up to!

That’s all for now, off to start work on the first BOTs cartoon, and my Vis Diary, now that I’ve got some material written up! Good times!

Grumpy-Old-Lady-Standing-At-The-Bus-Stop-BOT & Hippy-BOT

So I found my fine line pens and set to work on these BOTs. Grumpy…BOT, below, is going to be based on the first image (black line on white) and will be coloured in – the other images are just extra ideas I came up with while messing about with the image!

Also, Hippy-BOTs changed a lil bit! In true phsycadelic form, there had to be melted, mushy rainbow colours – and an out of focus BOT! These ideas were doodled on a bit of newspaper, and for some reason after adding colour to HippyBOT the background went really grainy, and it’s picked up some of the surrounding details!

So I’d say maybe a couple more days working on these BOTs and then I’ll be going on to create a page for these characters on my blog! Good times! 😀

Off to chill with a glass of Vino now and relax the brain before work tomorrow – sometimes it’s good to have a rainy day! 😀

Rainy Day Doodles

Rain…

rain, rain, RAIN!

However, this downright icky weather has resulted in some free doodling time – which also fills up some pages in my Summer Visual Diary for Uni! 😀

Been working on some friends for my JamesBot (with a very chunky felt pen, so excuse these early roughs please!) , so far there’s Rock-Bot, Geek-Bot, Hippy-Bot, Arty-bot and Grumpy-Old-Lady-Standing-At-The-Bus-Stop-Bot.

These are jus some random ideas that I’ve quickly coloured in on Photoshop. I think I’m going to develop Hippy-Bot and Grumpy…-Bot, thoughts perhaps?

Also, my mate Tully had the best reaction ever to my Lil’ Devils on Facebook! So they wanted to show her their Lil’ Science Lab where they cause cute chaos when they’re not shopping for Toffee Popcorn and Purple Waistcoats! x

Over and out for now!
